Background

Born as twins to a wealthy Kikuchi family. Maria lived a privileged life along with her older twin, Miyu ; their father as the sole heir of the Kikuchi Conglomerate and their mother, a Dutch model. As children their life pretty much revolves around home schooling and all the lessons about social demeanour and etiquette taught by their overbearing grandmother. However, their mother was against this, thinking that her daughters should learn more outside rather than being kept inside the mansion all the time. This only widened the rift between the twins' mother and grandmother, eventually straining the relationship of the twins' parents.

The twins' mother filed for divorce when they were eight and left for Netherlands, taking Miyu with her. Ever since then, Maria spent her days in loneliness, occasionally trying to convince her father to go and visit Miyu (though they never did). Now left as the sole heir, her grandmother made her take many more lessons, insisting that she must become the perfect heiress and Maria could only obey. Her father grew more protective of his now one and only daughter (due to her frail body) and started to dote more on her. He even allowed Maria to keep in touch with her twin, much to her delight. 

The time comes for Maria to attend highschool. As usual, her grandmother already planned to have her attend a prestigious high school somewhere in Tokyo and of course, Maria could never disobey her grandmother. But after hearing about her twin’s possible return to Japan (and receiving an encouragement from her), Maria refused for the first time, saying she that it is time for her to make her own decisions as the future head of the Kikuchi family. Although her actions surprised both her father and (slightly agitated) her grandmother at first, they finally gave her their approval, after going through a long family discussion.

Maria’s choice eventually landed to Seiko High, a school where she would later reunite with her twin, Miyu. Excited for her new school, she hopes to learn more about things around her and of course, be able to express herself more, without being burdened by the obligation of becoming the 'perfect role'. After all, she desires freedom; freedom to make her own choices, to be what she wants, freedom to be herself...
